Barbies, Dolls & Action Figures: Why Kids’ Party Themes Still Matter

Growing up in the 80s, we had the best toys! We had Cabbage Patch Kids, “Mandy & Jenny” dolls (I still have them!), Barbies, and I even had a Kimberly the Cheerleader doll. My brother had all the action figures — especially He-Man . And of course, those toys became our birthday party themes too.

Today, American Girl dolls replaced “Mandy & Jenny,” and Super Hero Squad replaced He-Man (although the He-Man movie is coming out this summer!).

But one thing I love about parties today is how personalized they’ve become. Kids don’t just pick one theme anymore — they blend together all the little things they love.

A 13-year-old might love skincare, makeup, spa vibes, and crafting, so we end up bedazzling mirrors while wearing face masks and sipping pink lemonade. Another child might love pink bows, cats, cozy sleepovers, and all things glitter — and somehow it all comes together perfectly.

It doesn't stop for Kids Parties - we have a bridal shower for someone who loves mushrooms, Vegas, Elvis, rose gold and navy. (Stay tuned next week to how it comes together).

That’s honestly my favorite part of creating celebrations now. Parties feel less about picking a package off a shelf and more about celebrating who kids actually are right now in this moment. Their personalities, hobbies, favorite colors, trends, collections, and little quirks all become part of the celebration.

And really, maybe that’s what parties have always been about.

Cute? Or Scary!?!
